Our take
3/5McInnis Park in San Rafael suits a birthday built around a group picnic. Its group picnic areas give families a place to organize the gathering, with parents choosing how to spend the celebration. This is a sensible option for a family that enjoys putting together its own outdoor party.
The important planning threshold is 20 people: groups that size or larger need an advance reservation. Count everyone attending before choosing your arrangements, and discuss picnic-area use with the county. Build the day's activities around what your group enjoys, with a weather backup in mind.
